Abstract
Although his knowledge of English is fluent, El Khalifa Sherif, a distinguished Sudanese, rarely writes in this language. The present poem derives from his visit last year to the U.S. and was sent, with an appreciative letter, to “kind colleagues in the department for African studies.” As he remarked in this letter, “It is a new kind of crop in my garden and may not flower again.”
