Available on JSTOR at: doi.org/10.2307/3334380 Abstract "Le Blanc en Procès" (The White Man on Trial) surveys the efforts of the African novelist writing in French to redeem and rehabilitate his ego by de-mystifying the white man. The black man's xenophobia is seen as the product of the white man's hypocrisy which takes the form of segregation and discrimination in all domains. In sketching this portrait of the white man, African writers have brought into relief all the defensive reflexes of a dominant minority which seeks, through racist attitudes, to justify its privileged position, but which fears the ultimate reversal of the hierarchy.
