Nur Ain Shahrier, Sunway University: This paper examines the trade disputes between the United States and China, as it has become apparent that global growth has slowed down and reduced the volume of world trade. A vector autoregressive model is constructed to examine the impact of the U.S.–China trade war on the Thai economy. The results indicate that Thailand's output and exports to key markets are adversely affected by U.S. trade actions against China and by China's retaliation. The slowdown in the Chinese economy also put downward pressure on world commodity prices, which in turn reduced Thailand's exports values.
The paper is interesting, but it does not consider many of the comments and feedback given during the Asian Economic Panel Meeting when the author presented.
