Artificial intelligence (AI) has garnered increasing interest within the computer music community, boasting a diverse range of applications. Notably, computational creativity and music generation systems have been booming, with artificial agents becoming more autonomous, capable of producing symbolic outputs such as scores and audio files.

This special issue is dedicated to the exploration of cocreative endeavors involving AI systems, wherein multiple agents can initiate content changes. In particular, it delves into systems that encompass collaborations between human and AI systems, commonly referred to as mixed-initiative cocreative systems. These cocreative platforms offer distinctive avenues of creative expression for musicians and of musical experience for listeners. However, these interactions give rise to numerous questions regarding how they can be interpreted, as well as how they can help one understand, inform, evaluate, and/or model creative processes—whether the focus is on performance, composition, improvisation, audience appreciation, or music recommendation.
