Abstract
Established in 1980 as a “Special Economic Zone,” Shenzhen Municipality is an emblem of China's modernity, where the planned economy of the socialist state transitioned into a market-based system. The new environment shaped new social relations, enabling individuals to reimagine themselves. The subjective and social metamorphoses are examined through an analysis of the process of composing the performance piece Hushuo.
