Koffi Kwahulé

Koffi Kwahulé, born in Côte d’Ivoire in 1956, has been working between Africa and France since 1990. He is the prize-winning author of some 25 plays and three novels. His theatre is widely performed throughout Europe and West Africa and has been translated into 15 different languages. He holds a doctorate in Theatre Studies from the University of Paris III and was trained as an actor and director both in Abidjan at the National Theatre School and at Ecole de la Rue Blanche in Paris.

Judith G. Miller is Professor of French and Francophone theatre at NYU. She has published widely on contemporary French-language theatre productions. Her most recent books include Ariane Mnouchkine (Routledge, 2007) and Mother Folly: A Tale, a translation of a study of psychosis by psycholanalyst Françoise Davoine (Stanford University Press, 2014). She has translated over 20 texts from the French (by Hélène Cixous, Olivier Kemeid, Werewere Liking, José Pliya, among others). With Chantal Bilodeau she has compiled a forthcoming anthology of Koffi Kwahulé’s plays titled In and Out of Africa: The Plays of Koffi Kwahulé (The University of Michigan Press). [email protected]

Abstract

Koffi Kwahulé’s Masquerade for the Wounded performs the trauma and marginalization of women who have been raped during a period of civil war. A short commentary accompanies the play, which has been translated from the French.
