Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine. He is the recipient of 12 honorary doctorates from universities in Africa, Europe, America, and New Zealand. His books include the novels A Grain of Wheat (Penguin, 1967), Petals of Blood (Penguin, 1977), and Wizard of the Crow (Anchor Books, 2006); the essay collections Decolonizing the Mind (Heinemann, 1986) and Something Torn and New (BasicCivitas, 2009); and the memoirs Dreams in a Time of War (Anchor Books, 2010), In the House of the Interpreter (Anchor Books, 2012), and Birth of a Dream Weaver (The New Press, 2016), and Wrestling with the Devil (The New Press, 2018). His fable, The Upright Revolution (2016), an English translation of the Gĩkũyũ, Ituĩka rĩa Mũrũngarũ, and originally issued by Jalada magazine, has been translated into 68 languages, making it one of the most translated stories in history. www.ngugiwathiongo.com

The celebration of the 250th anniversary of Poland’s national theatre, Teatr Narodowy, inspired reflections on the National Theatre of Kenya, the debate over what constitutes a national theatre, and the founding of the Kamĩrĩthũ Community Education and Cultural Center.
