How and to what extent can the materiality of the body be manipulated to effect a transformation of sex and gender? A psychoanalytically informed reading of Cassils’s performances of (un)becoming reveals that the artist contests the binaries of sex and gender at the level of bodily morphology and through transference and resignification of the phallus.
