Joshua L. Truett, a Fulbright-García Robles Researcher/Artist 2018–2019 (Mexico), is a PhD Candidate in Theatre with a specialization in Gender and Sexuality Studies at The Ohio State University. His dissertation, “Velas, Muxes, and the Performance of Zapotec Style: Indigenous Festival and the Making of Dissident Counterpublics,” investigates the vela festivals hosted by communities of muxes, a third-gender identity in the Zapotec culture of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, Mexico.
