Issues of race, dance, and the performativity of fashion intersect in Rick Owens’s Spring/Summer 2014 ready-to-wear fashion runway presentation “Vicious,” a collaboration with choreographer LeeAnét Noble and 40 American step dancers. Asking how this event intervenes in the racial and body politics of the fashion industry interrogates how black lives are allowed to matter, in fashion and in performance scholarship.
