Kelly Nipper’s video installation Weather Center (2009) is emblematic of the presence of dance in recent visual art. Nipper’s persistent fascinations with Mary Wigman, Laban Movement Analysis, and expansive notation practices result in live performances, moving-image installations, and photographs, creating visual art that reveals how dance and its particular histories can function as malleable material within the museum.

Mei Lanfang, the internationally renowned male player of female roles, astonished those who were concerned about his personal and professional well being during the Second Sino-Japanese War by growing a mustache. At the empirical level, the mustache signaled a dismissal of the androgynous glamour for which Mei’s body was best known. At the allegorical level, Mei’s wartime mustache foregrounded an unyielding and unmistakably masculine Chinese body.

The South African hip hop group Die Antwoord deploys blackface performance as part of a racial project that characterizes race as contingent and mutable in contrast to its rigid apartheid articulation. Examining the flows that carry their work transnationally makes visible the ways US cultural consumption becomes entangled with processes of racialization.
