A Discussion on the Global and Universal

Daniel Bertrand Monk holds the George R. and Myra T. Cooley Chair in Peace and Conflict Studies at Colgate University, where he is a professor of Geography and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. He is author of An Aesthetic Occupation: The Immediacy of Architecture and the Palestine Conflict (Duke University Press, 2002) as well other studies on the Israel-Palestine conflict. He edited, with Mike Davis, Evil Paradises: The Dreamworlds of Neoliberalism (New Press, 2007); and, with Jacob Mundy, The Post-Conflict Environment: Intervention and Critique (University of Michigan Press, 2014).

Andrew Herscher is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan with appointments in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Department of Art History, and Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He is the author of Violence Taking Place: The Architecture of the Kosovo Conflict (Stanford University Press, 2010) and The Unreal Estate Guide to Detroit (University of Michigan Press, 2012), and is currently completing a book on the socialist monument in and after Yugoslavia.

Miriam Ticktin is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the New School and codirector of the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility. She is the author of Casualties of Care: Immigration and the Politics of Humanitarianism in France (University of California Press, 2011) and coeditor (with Ilana Feldman) of In the Name of Humanity: The Government of Threat and Care (Duke University Press, 2010).

Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi is Assistant Professor and Faculty Fellow at the Gallatin School, New York University, and Research Fellow at the Institute for Urban and Landscape Studies, University of Basel. She is currently developing a manuscript on a history of architecture and humanitarianism that examines emergency sites, practices, and discourses in East Africa and Western Europe from the eighteenth century to the present.

Lucia Allais is Assistant Professor in Architectural History and Theory at Princeton University. Her research explores the intersection of architecture and preservation with international politics in the twentieth century, paying particular attention to how modern design principles combine with institutional ideologies in the construction and destruction of buildings. She is an editor of Grey Room and a member of Aggregate.

M. Ijlal Muzaffar is an Assistant Professor of Modern Architectural History at the Rhode Island School of Design. He holds a Master's in Architecture from Princeton and a Ph.D. in Architecture from MIT. His work explores how architecture and design have shaped the ethics and politics of intervention across the world, particularly in the realm of Third World development discourse.

Mark Jarzombek, Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture at MIT, works on a wide range of historical topics with a particular focus on nineteenth- and twentieth-century modernism, and the history and theory of architecture. His recent books include Architecture of First Societies: A Global Perspective (John Wiley, 2013) and, with Francis D.K. Ching and Vikramaditya Prakash, A Global History of Architecture (John Wiley, 2011).

Swati Chattopadhyay is Professor in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is author of Representing Calcutta: Modernity, Nationalism, and the Colonial Uncanny (Routledge, 2005), Unlearning the City: Infrastructure in a New Optical Field (University of Minnesota Press, 2012), and coeditor (with Jeremy White) of City Halls and Civic Materialism: Towards a Global History of Urban Public Space (Routledge, 2014).
