Jamil Hasanli is a prominent Azerbaijani scholar well known for his books on the contemporary history of Iran. His book At the Dawn of the Cold War: The Soviet-American Crisis over Iranian Azerbaijan, 1941–1946, published in 2006 in the Harvard Cold War Studies Book Series, attracted significant attention in the international scholarly community. In a recent monograph written on the basis of numerous documents from archives in Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, the United States, France, and Great Britain, Hasanli analyzes several topics: the diplomatic struggle between the USSR and leading countries of the West around Baku oil in 1939–1940; Soviet cultural and political expansion in Iranian Azerbaijan; the foundation and development of the People's Commissariat of Foreign Affairs (NKID) of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic (AzSSR); events in Iran and Turkey in 1941–1945; and the struggle among the wartime Allies for political influence in the region and Iranian oil....
