Artan Hoxha's Sugarland is a veritable breath of fresh air in the field of East European—and particularly, Albanian—studies. The literature in English on Albanian history is sparse, a hangover from the long decades of Communist rule that prevented access to archives, but also a result of the “little country problem” that plagues the East European field. Fortunately, the paucity of scholarly work on Albania published in English has been at least partly corrected by a new generation of scholars from the region, like Hoxha, with knowledge of English, who are educated abroad, and are part of international scholarly networks. Central European University (CEU) has been an important incubator within Europe for much of this new work, and the university's publishing house has come to have the broadest, richest, and most inclusive list of work in the field.
