      Urban Fabric

Juba is a boomtown, pronounced by primarily informal architecture and urban elements. Markets, small shops and boda-boda (small “public transport” motorcycles) nodes have defined the city’s urban character. With independence and a slow return to stability, aggressive land grabbing and uncontrolled commercial growth are transforming the urban landscape. ([CC BY-SA 2014] r0g_agency gGmbH)

      Urban Squeeze

Juba rapid growth, uncontrolled planning and fortified compound urban architecture squeeze any remnant of public space. Citizens are forced into zones defined by automobiles—an open urbanist approach would allow public dialogue in defining the city’s future and sustainability as a “living city.” ([CC BY-SA 2014] r0g_agency gGmbH)

      Urban Incision

United Nations (UNMISS) “Protection of Civilian” (PoC) sites have created a new form of insulated and isolated “compound” neighborhood since violence in South Sudan erupted in December 2013. Will peace allow the dissolution of these areas, or are they here to stay? ([CC BY-SA 2014] UNESCO South Sudan)
