About MIT Press Direct

Known for iconic design, rigorous scholarship, and creative technology, the MIT Press is a leading publisher of books and journals at the intersection of science, technology, and the arts. We work daily to reimagine what a university press can be, and to use our power as an academic publisher to elevate knowledge to inform and empower.

This vision is what inspired the launch of MIT Press Direct in January 2019 as an independent, cost-effective, and accessible way for libraries to offer MIT Press ebooks to their patrons. In 2020, we expanded the utility and reach of the platform by incorporating our journals, and in 2022 we added the essential research tool CogNet to the collection.

MIT Press Direct has also catalyzed our open access publishing initiatives for both journals and books. We now have 34 journals actively publishing in hybrid, diamond, and gold open access models. And the Direct to Open publishing model launched in 2021 has produced more than 80 open access editions of our books in its first year thanks to generous support from 265 libraries. MIT Press Direct Books

MIT Press Direct is the best way for libraries to offer MIT Press eBooks to their patrons. Libraries can access the complete collection, with more than 3,000 eBooks and approximately 150 added each year, or subject-specific collections.

Key subject areas covered in the complete collection include art and architecture, biomedical sciences, business and finance, computer science, cognitive science, design, education, environment, game studies, humanities, information science, linguistics, neuroscience, new media, philosophy, and social sciences.

MIT Press Journals

The MIT Press is a mission-driven, not-for-profit scholarly publisher devoted to the widest dissemination of its content. The Press published its first two quarterlies, Journal of Interdisciplinary History and Linguistic Inquiry in 1970 and founded its journals branch shortly thereafter in 1972. Today, the division publishes more than forty titles, frequently adding select publications of long-standing repute or innovative, fresh material to its current list.

The MIT Press, among the first university presses to offer its serial titles online, delivers content in print and electronic formats, covering a wide range of disciplines including the arts and humanities, social sciences, and specialized areas of science and technology. With a commitment to growth and evolution of scholarly publishing, the journals division continues to expand its publishing program, recently launching Rapid Reviews: COVID-19, the Harvard Data Science Review, and three new open access journals in the brain sciences, including Neurobiology of Language, Network Neuroscience, and Open MIND: Discoveries in Cognitive Science. Our journals’ web pages are viewed over 5 million times a year, and boast about 2 million visitors from diverse regions. Publications such as Global Environmental Politics and Innovations explore provocative issues of global relevance, including world politics, entrepreneurship, environmental change, and international finance, and feature reportage on subjects and regions not widely covered in the general media. For over thirty years, the journals division has acquired titles considered required reading in their fields. Direct to Open (D2O)

D2O harnesses the collective power of libraries to support open and equitable access to vital, leading scholarship. Developed over two years with the generous support of the Arcadia Fund, in close collaboration with the library community, D2O:

• Opens access to new MIT Press scholarly monographs and edited collections (~90 per year).
• Provides participating libraries with term access to backlist/archives (~2,500 titles).
• Covers partial direct costs for the publication of high-quality works that are also available for print purchase.

Since its launch in 2021, D2) has attracted support from more than 265 libraries and opened access to 80 scholarly monographs. With only 50 of the first 80 books available, D2O books have been accessed more than 176K times in the first 10 months of 2022.
