Candaules, Commissioner: A Dramatic Fable in Four Scenes

DANIEL C. GEROULD has made an enormous contribution to the making of the modern repertoire in the numerous collections of plays, documents and essays he edited throughout his career. They include Doubles, Demons, and Dreamers: An International Collection of Symbolist Drama, Avant-Garde Drama between the Wars, The Witkiewicz Reader, Theatre/Theory/Theatre, and American Melodrama. He was a frequent contributor to PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, where many of the translations of modern plays from Russian, Polish, and French appeared. His own previously uncollected writings appear in Quick Change: Theatre Essays and Translations. At the time of his death, in 2012, Daniel C. Gerould held the distinguished Lucille Lortel Professor of Theatre position at the City University of New York Graduate Center.
