JULIA SIRMONS is a PhD student in theater at Columbia University. She holds an MA in film studies, also from Columbia, and received her undergraduate degree in cinema studies and English literature from the University of Chicago. She is interested in the relationships between theater and media, specifically intermedial melodrama, performing arts documentaries, and the convergences of opera and cinema. Her writing on cinema and theater has appeared in Opera Quarterly and The Brooklyn Rail.
