Simone Forti, exhibition, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, CA, January 15–April 2, 2023.

In February 2020, the then director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles asked Simone Forti how she felt about the increasing interest of art museums in her work. Forti took a breath and responded, “There’s a dynamic where one person gets singled out—it’s a social dynamic. I say to myself, ’Simone, play that role with grace because you’ve been given that role.’”1 Forti’s careful comment conveyed her consciousness of community as well as her enduring modesty, values foregrounded in the exhibition that eventually opened three years later in MOCA’s Grand Avenue building.

Titled simply Simone Forti, the show occupied just three rooms, stretching across Forti’s varied practice without trying to cover everything. Its scope and presentation made room for her achievements in dance while also showcasing other delight­fully...
