As advanced telecommunications and telepresence systems allow artificial adjacency to substitute for physical adjacency among activities, many traditional building types are likely to fragment and recombine. Built spaces will still be needed for living, work, and recreation, but they will be organized and configured in new ways. This paper examines a variety of traditional building types and sketches some plausible scenarios for their transformation in the digital telecommunications era.
