Abstract
Digital design tools are becoming essential technologies in the conservation of traditional artistic heritage. They provide non-invasive approaches to preserve culturally significant artworks. Despite their growing application, a critical gap remains in understanding their effectiveness in preserving the intricate and expressive qualities of Chinese line drawing. This study aims to bridge this gap by systematically reviewing the potential of various digital technologies. These include 3D modelling, high-resolution scanning, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered restoration, and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR). Chinese line drawing is renowned for its minimalist and expressive brushstrokes, making its conservation a complex challenge. To achieve this objective, an extensive search was conducted across three leading academic databases, encompassing Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science (WoS). A total of 43 relevant studies were selected based on their focus on heritage conservation and the application of digital technologies. The findings reveal that digital tools can effectively capture intricate details and maintain the cultural integrity of Chinese line drawing without the need for physical intervention. However, several challenges persist. These challenges mainly concern the authenticity of digital reproductions and technical limitations associated with high-fidelity replication. This study underscores the importance of culturally sensitive algorithms and advocates for interdisciplinary collaboration. Such collaboration is essential to safeguard both the aesthetic and philosophical aspects of Chinese line drawing. The study concludes by providing critical insights into the current and future directions of digital conservation. It emphasizes the need for ongoing technological advancements and policy frameworks to support the preservation of fragile and culturally significant art forms.
