L. H. Roper is Professor of History at the State University of New York–New Paltz. He is the author of Conceiving Carolina: Proprietors, Planters, and Plots, 1662–1729 (New York and Houndmills, U.K.: Palgrave Macmillan, 2004) and The English Empire in America, 1602–1658: Beyond Jamestown (London: Pickering & Chatto, 2009) as well as the coeditor (with Bertrand Van Ruymbeke) of Constructing Early Modern Empires: Proprietary Ventures in the Atlantic World, 1500–1750 (Leiden and Boston: Brill, 2007) and (with Jaap Jacobs) The Worlds of the Seventeenth-Century Hudson Valley (Albany: SUNY Press, 2014). He is presently working on a book manuscript on the history of the English Empire between the accession of Charles I and the annulment of the charter of the Massachusetts Bay Company (1625–84).

Abstract

The English takeover of the Dutch colony of New Netherland in 1664 illustrates the enduring centrality of colonial agendas in the political culture of the seventeenth-century English Empire but also provided an occasion by which the metropolitan government and its perspective ironically assumed greater weight in colonial-imperial relations.
