Paul Lewis is a Professor of English at Boston College whose work focuses on American literature and culture, 1789–1860, dark humor, and gothic fiction. He is vice president of the Poe Studies Association and chair of the Edgar Allan Poe Foundation of Boston, which led the successful effort to memorialize Poe in the city in which he was born, in part by commissioning a statue placed at the corner of Boylston and Cambridge Streets. He has also curated two exhibitions:The Raven in the Frog Pond: Edgar Allan Poe and the City of Boston(http://www.bc.edu/schools/cas/english/poebostonexhibit) andForgotten Chapters of Boston's Literary History(http://www.bostonliteraryhistory.com).

Haunted by the possibility that Edgar Allan Poe wrote a long-forgotten verse satire published in the September 1835 issue of the New England Magazine, the author of this essay launches an investigation to rid himself of his obsession.
