In the second half of the nineteenth century, Gloucester's fishing schooners bridged masculinized and feminized labor and were central to negotiations about industry risk. Reading these vessels alongside literature, newspapers, and art, I argue that their complex cultural position is legible in their design and in constructions of their gender.
