for article titled, The Literature of Revolution and the Origins of Ideological Origins
This essay examines the extent to which Bailyn in Ideological Origins paid a literary scholar’s attention to word choice, imagery, variants, and even reception and a historian’s attention to the context in which such details found meaning. Ironically, the scholar which may have shaped Bailyn’s thinking most was Perry Miller whose second volume of the New England Mind he had reviewed critically.
