This article examines a New England industrial disaster, the January 10, 1860, collapse in Lawrence, Massachusetts, of the Pemberton Mill. In under five minutes the building caved in and 98, mostly immigrant workers, lost their lives. An inquest assigned blame to one individual. The question remains: Was justice done?
