Thoreau's contemporary George Perkins Marsh imagined a mode of environmentalism sharply different from ecocentrism. Defining non-human nature as created for human use, Marsh nonetheless argued for sustainable, moral relationships between humans and nature and drew connections between government and science that laid foundations for modern institutions like the EPA and the Forest Service.
